SOTW: June is Teen Angst Month!
I’ve been listening to a LOT of the old pop-punk/punk music that got me through my tumultuous high school years to get through the break-up, and I’ve found that it’s just as good for working out as it is for being angry to. So this month is going to be Teen Angst month, I hope y’all are ready.
I almost forgot to do this! This week has been a killer as I try to sort out how I’m going to live my life in light of my relationship’s disintegration. I’ve been doing a lot of walking to give myself time to breathe and think, and what good is walking without music to walk to?
Mumford and Sons are amazing, as many of you probably already know. “The Cave” has a steady rhythm to it that is great for all kinds of cardio exercise: running, walking, biking, etc. There’s a sense of triumph as the song climaxes —
So make your siren’s call and sing all you want
I will not hear what you have to say
‘Cause I need freedom now
And I need to know how to live my life as it’s meant to be
And I will hold on hope
And I will let you choke on the noose around your neck
And I’ll find strength in pain and I will change my ways
I’ll know my name as it’s called again
And it is fantastic to be there and push through your workout as the music swells. That part got me over a hill while walking yesterday, and all I could think was how much more perfect the moment could have been if I were running. Maybe that’s what I’ll be doing the next time :)
As always, you can buy The Cave at Amazon.com and iTunes for $1.29.

New feature! Music is what fuels my workouts, and I don’t know if I could get half of what I do every week done without some beat or lyrics driving me forward. I’m sure many of my followers feel the same, so I want to share what moves me in hopes that it’ll give you something new to listen to while you put yourself to work.
To kick us off, I’ll start with a song that has been on constant repeat since I heard (and danced to) it live on the 20th.Barlightsby Fun. is uplifting and catchy ashell. It’s great to walk to, bop on the elliptical to, lift to and, I imagine, run to. When Nate Ruess declares “I’m gonna live forever” and the choir comes in to repeat the phrase “I feel alive”, I feel like I amsoaring- a great emotion to have during a workout.
You can purchase the song on its own for $0.99 on Amazon and $1.99 on iTunes, but please do yourself a favor and just buy the whole damn album (and their follow-up, Some Nights, as well) because the music is sure to reserve a spot on all of your future workout playlists. The deluxe version is worth it for the bonus track, Stitch Me Up.

This week’s workout song is an old classic for a 90’s girl like me! The Spice Girls used to be queens among tweens, and I will openly admit that I listen to at least one song from the Spice World album a week. “Do It” is an amped up girl-power anthem that is great for everything from walking down the sidewalk like you own the world to a nice cardio workout warm-up/cool-down (it’s a bit slow for anything inbetween).
Who cares what they say ‘cause the rules are for breaking
Who made them anyway?
You’ve gotta show what you feel, don’t hide
C’mon and do it, don’t care how you look it’s just how you feel
You’ve gotta make it real
C’mon and do it, it’s time to free what’s in your soul
You’ve got to get it right this time
C’mon, freak out, lose control
If you’d like to buy the song, it’s available on Amazon for $0.99 and iTunes for $1.29. Or you can check out your local used CD store and probably find it for pretty darn cheap (or hit up someone who was a tween in the late 90’s and they’ll probably give you a heavily-supervised loaner).

Things haven’t been exactly peachy in my personal life lately. Nothing I can discuss on the internet, but let’s just say yesterday I came home and went to bed at 5:45 pm because I was so drained.
But there was cause for celebration on Monday - my fiancé FINALLY got a job, which he starts Monday. Unfortunately our celebratory dinner at Dinosaur BBQ cost me 800+ extra calories :x And yesterday I went over because I fed my feelings with 1.5 doughnuts and the leftovers from Monday.
Obviously I’ve broken pretty much all 3 of my goals for the week. To be honest, they haven’t even been near the forefront of my mind. Too much else has been going on. And it’s shark week, so my weigh in was upsetting - I know the extra couple of lb. was from bloating, but it’s still distressing to come off of a good week and have no tangible results. *sigh*
I got to the gym today and have had an excellent day, nutritionally speaking. And this song was the one that stood out for me the most when I was working out. Eminem isn’t generally my cup of tea, but there’s something about this song that makes me feel so determined and ready to fight. Which is what this is all about - fighting for what I want (a healthy, fit body and a happy life).
Now to figure out what to have for dinner…
